Met HR Director Martin Tiplady: HR could be “priced out as an expensive overhead” (The Times -Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010)
HR must be more cost-effective to fend off being “priced out as an expensive overhead”, Martin Tiplady, group HR director at the Metropolitan Police, has warned.
“We’ve got to look deep into our assumptions about what makes good HR, change what we do and reposition ourselves as a cheaper, more effective and more strategic offering,” he said in his keynote address.
“Future HR is about understanding how you fit into the business and how what you do aids and abets the product,” continued Tiplady.
Here at Syat we applaud the insight of Martin Tiplady in recognising the need for HR to make a bigger and more strategic contribution. However he still talks in terms of efficiency improvements -making HR a “cheaper” option! We have come acrosss many Directors and managers who are continually looking for cheaper options and whilst this has been an effective strategy, the reality is that it has also been the only strategy for many for the last decade!
The current environment demands an increase in individual, team, functional and organisational effectiveness. How? By improving the proportion of money spent that generates real returns; by turning operational cost into genuine investment. This means creating the conditions in which people can demonstrably be seen as an asset and creating an HR function that adds real, demonstrable value to the bottom line! This requires changes in thinking and changes in action. This is HR’s opportunity to make a quantum difference!
Would you like to know more about making a quantum difference? To discover how to ensure HR can add more value? How can you turn HR expenditure from a operational cost to a strategic investment?
